Gilbert Melendez trains out of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with the likes of Jake Shields, Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz. In a crew known for its bad boy antics, El Nino consistently displays his maturity and sets a good example for his one-year-old daughter Leylakay Valentina Melendez.

Since his last loss in 2008, Gilbert has been on a tear with six straight victories under the Strikeforce banner. Currently, Melendez holds the Strikeforce lightweight title, which he defended against Jorge Masvidal on December 17th, 2011.
